Etymologie [ k&m-pan-y&n ] (noun.) 13th century. From Old French compaignon (French: compagnon), from Low Latin compāniōn- (nominative singular compāniō), from com- + pānis (with + bread), first attested in the Frankish Lex Salica as a translation of a Germanic word represented by Gothic gahlaiba "messmate" from ga- + hlaiba (with + bread), Old High German galeipo from ga- + leipo (with + bread).
