Etymologie [ 'ramp ] (verb.) 14th century. From French rampe, back-formation of Old French ramper, from Frankish *rampon (“to contract oneself”), akin to Old High German rimpfan (German rümpfen (“to wrinkle up”)). Compare Danish rimpe (“to fold" (archaic), "to baste”), Icelandic rimpa.
