It is not related to Latin dies (which is from Proto-Indo-European base *dyeu- (“to shine”)), but rather to Sanskrit दाह (dāha, “heat”), which came from Proto-Indo-European *dʰegʰ- (“to burn”). * Thus, today and day are not related to Spanish día, but to favor and fever.
