Proofs are prints that are created in addition to the limited signed and numbered edition, authorized by the artist The total size of an art edition consists of the signed and numbered prints plus all outstanding proofs If a set of proofs consists of more than one print, numbers are inscribed to indicate the number of the print within the total number of the particular type of proof, (for example, PP 6/20 means the sixth print in a set of 20 identical prints authorized as publishers proofs) The artist usually signs the proofs as validation of the prints
n, pl 1 Prints created in addition to the limited, signed-and-numbered edition Only one type of proof, the artists proof (traditionally the first ten percent of each edition), is sold as part of a regular edition Usage Note: There are several other types of proofs not available for purchase, including publishers proofs (signed-and-numbered proofs originally used as donations or as gifts from the artists and publishers), printers proofs (retained by the printer as reference), and exhibition or sample proofs (made available to galleries for display purposes)
