[ 'ka-n&-b&s ] (noun.) 1783. Latin cannabis 'hemp', from Ancient Greek κάνναβις (kánnabis), from Scythian (compare Kurdish kinif, Ossetian gän), from a compound of Finno-Ugric *kéne 'hemp' (compare Estonian kena, Lapp kèdž', Udmurt kenem) and *piš 'to burn; nettle' (compare Komi/Udmurt pyš, Khanty piš). This word was borrowed widely into Semitic, Balto-Slavic and Germanic. See hemp.
