X-ray diffraction: The diffraction pattern so obtained
X-ray diffraction: The scattering of X-rays by the regular lattice of atoms or molecules in a crystal
X-ray diffraction: The technique of using such patterns to determine that geometry of a crystal, or the arrangements of atoms in a molecule; X-ray crystallography
x-ray diffraction: The scattering of x-rays by crystal atoms, producing a diffraction pattern that yields information about the structure of the crystal. Phenomenon in which the atoms of a crystal, by virtue of their uniform spacing, cause an interference pattern of the waves in an incident beam of X rays. The crystal's atomic planes act on the X rays in the same way a uniformly ruled grating acts on a beam of light (see polarization).
