A contagious disease of the respiratory system that usually affects children; caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. In the advanced stage it is characterised by spasms of coughing followed by a whooping sound during the intake of breath
Whooping cough is a serious infectious disease which causes people to cough and make a loud noise when they breathe in. an infectious disease that especially affects children, and makes them cough and have difficulty breathing. or pertussis Acute, very contagious childhood disease, typically with bouts of coughing followed by a long, loud inhalation (whoop) and ending with mucus expulsion and often vomiting. Serious complications include bronchopneumonia (pneumonia involving the bronchi), asphyxia, seizures, and signs of brain damage. Treatment is with antibiotics. The pertussis vaccine is usually combined with tetanus and diphtheria toxoids as part of routine childhood immunizations
