    [ säf-"mOr, -"mor also ] (noun.) 1688. From earlier sophumer, from the obsolete sophom (“sophism or dialectical exercise”), likely influenced by Ancient Greek σοφός (sophos, “wise”) + μωρός (mōros, “fool”). Compare oxymoron (literally “sharp-dull”), a similar contradiction.
