Standard Generalized Markup Language
SGML is a computer language for creating files using a system of codes. SGML is an abbreviation for `standard generalized mark-up language'. standard generalized markup language a way of writing a document on a computer so that its structure is clear, and so that it can easily be read on a different computer system. in full Standard Generalized Markup Language Markup language for organizing and tagging elements of a document, including headings, paragraphs, tables, and graphics. The elements are marked according to their meaning and relationship to other elements rather than to the format of their presentation. The tagged elements can then be formatted in different ways according to the unique rules for different applications. Readable by both humans and computer programs, SGML is usable in a wide range of applications, including print publishing, CD-ROMs, and database systems. Generic coding of electronic manuscripts was first proposed in the late 1960s; in 1969 an IBM team developed GML, which was adopted by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and Department of Defense. In the late 1970s the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established a committee to create SGML from GML; it was accepted by the International Organization for Standards in 1986. Standard Generalized Markup Language A set of standards for document markup tags SGML rules formed the basis for HTML

Standard Generalized Markup Language A standard framework for defining particular text markup languages The SGML framework allows for mixing structural tags that describe format with the plain text content of documents, so that fancy text can be fully described in a plain text stream of data (See also HTML, XML, and fancy text )
Standard Generalised Mark-up Language, a code used to make documents readable across a variety of platforms and software HTML is a simplified version of SGML
Standard Generalized Markup Language, an international standard (ISO 8879) that specifies the rules for the creation of platform-independent markup languages for electronic texts
Standard Generalized Markup Language An international standard for the definition of device-independent, system-independent methods of representing texts in electronic form SGML emphasizes descriptive rather than procedural markup While HTML is a markup language which deals primarily with the appearance of a document, SGML is a more complex system for describing structural divisions in a text (title page, chapter, scene, stanza), typographical elements (changing typefaces), and other textual features (grammatical structure, etc ) The "tags" in SGML preserve the structure of a text, enable the user to constrain searches to particular structural features of the text and aid in the navigation and use of the text More information on SGML is available at http: //sunsite berkeley edu/SGML/
