Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. People who suffer from it are unable to relate their thoughts and feelings to what is happening around them and often withdraw from society. a serious mental illness in which someone's thoughts and feelings are not based on what is really happening around them (schizophrenie, from schizo- (from schizein; SCHISM) + phren ). Any of a group of severe mental disorders that have in common symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, blunted emotions, disorganized thinking, and withdrawal from reality.
