    Etymology

    [ 'O-bE-& ] (noun.) 1760. Origin uncertain. Apparently from a Caribbean creole, probably ultimately from a West African language. The OED points to Igbo abià (“knowledge, wisdom”), obìa (“doctor, healer”).
