{i} family name; Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), German mathematician and astronomer, father of modern astronomy (developed three laws which proved that the planets revolve around the sun)
German astronomer who first stated laws of planetary motion (1571-1630)
Kepler shear
The effect of differential rotation speeds in the rings of Saturn
Kepler solid
A non-convex regular polyhedron having regular polygons as its faces and in which the same number of faces meet at each of its vertices
Kepler solids
plural form of Kepler solid
Kepler's equation
the mathematical relationship between the mean anomaly (M) and the eccentric anomaly (E) of a planet in an elliptical orbit with eccentricity ( \textstyle \epsilon ). M = E - \epsilon \cdot \sin(E)
Kepler's laws
the three laws of planetary motion discovered by Kepler in the early 17th century
kepler's first law
a law stating that the orbit of each planet is an ellipse with the sun at one focus of the ellipse
kepler's law
(astronomy) one of three empirical laws of planetary motion stated by Johannes Kepler
kepler's second law
a law concerning the speed at which planets travel; a line connecting a planet to the sun will sweep out equal areas in equal times; "Kepler's second law means that a planet's orbital speed changes with its distance from the sun
kepler's third law
a law stating that the ratio of the square of the revolutionary period (in years) to the cube of the orbital axis (in astronomical units) is the same for all planets
Johannes Kepler
a German astronomer (=a scientist who studies the stars) who discovered how the planets move around the sun. These principles are known as Kepler's Laws, and they greatly influenced the work of Sir Isaac Newton (1571-1630). born Dec. 27, 1571, Weil der Stadt, Württemberg died Nov. 15, 1630, Regensburg German astronomer. Born into a poor family, he received a scholarship to the University of Tübingen. He received an M.A. in 1594, after which he became a mathematics teacher in Austria. He developed a mystical theory that the cosmos was constructed of the five regular polyhedrons, enclosed in a sphere, with a planet between each pair. He sent his paper on the subject to Tycho Brahe, who invited Kepler to join his research staff. In attempting to understand atmospheric refraction of light, he became the first to explain accurately how light behaves within the eye, how eyeglasses improve vision, and what happens to light in a telescope. In 1609 he published his finding that the orbit of Mars was an ellipse and not the perfect circle hitherto presumed to be the orbit of every celestial body. This fact became the basis of the first of Kepler's three laws of planetary motion. He also determined that planets move faster as they near the Sun (second law), and in 1619 he showed that a simple mathematical formula related the planets' orbital periods to their distance from the Sun (third law). In 1620 he defended his mother from charges of witchcraft, thereby preserving his own reputation as well
