a city in Israel, north of the Dead Sea. It is the oldest city in the world. According to the Old Testament of the Bible, it was attacked by Joshua, the leader of the Israelites, and his army shouted and blew their trumpets so loudly that the walls of the city fell down. Arabic Ar Town (pop., 1997: 14,674), West Bank territory. Inhabited since 9000 BC, it is famous in biblical tradition as the first town attacked by the Israelites under Joshua after they crossed the Jordan River. It was abandoned or destroyed several times and rebuilt in the same area. Captured by the British in 1918, it became part of the British mandate of Palestine. Incorporated into Jordan in 1950, it became the site of two huge camps of Arab refugees following the first Arab-Israeli war (1948). In the Six-Day War (1967), the town was occupied by Israel, and much of the refugee population was dispersed. In 1994 it was turned over to the Palestinian Authority under an Israeli-Palestinian self-rule agreement
{i} city in the West Bank under the control of the Palestinian Authority; city conquered by the Joshua and the Israelites as they came into the Promised Land (Biblical)
One of the world's oldest cities, Jericho's ruins lie near an oasis on the west side of the south Jordan River Valley Partly excavated by archaeologists, its earliest occupation dates to about 7800 b c e Although according to Joshua 2 and 5: 13-6: 26 its fortified walls crumbled when the Israelites marched around the city, radiocarbon dating indicates that the site was already abandoned at the time of the conquest (thirteenth century b c e ) Jericho was partly rebuilt by Hiel of Bethel during Ahab's reign (869-850 b c e ) (1 Kings 16: 34), but no evidence of this occupation remains It was extensively rebuilt during Herod's day (40-4 b c e ) and is mentioned several times in the New Testament (Matt 20: 29; Mark 10: 46; Luke 10: 30; 18: 35; 19: 1; Heb 11: 30)
When the army of God led by Joshua came to the well defended city of Jericho, Joshua sought the assistance of a higher power to gain access God said unto him "You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once Thus shall you do for six days And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark; and on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, the priests blowing the trumpets And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him " I think the very same builders worked on our house
