As a principal architect of armoured warfare and the blitzkrieg, he contributed decisively to Germany's victories early in World War II in Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. In 1943, as inspector general of armoured troops, he simplified and accelerated tank production. After the July Plot against Adolf Hitler, he became acting chief of staff (1944-45)
