    [ 'hag ] (noun.) 14th century. Middle English hagge, hegge 'demon, old woman', shortened form of Old English hægtesse, hægtes 'harpy, witch', from West Germanic *xaga-tusjōn (cf. East Frisian häkse, Dutch heks, German Hexe), compound of *xagaz 'able, skilled' (cf. Old Norse hagr 'handy, skillful', Middle High German behac 'of pleasure') and *tusjōn 'witch' (cf. Norwegian tysja 'fairy, crippled woman'), with *xagaz from Proto-Indo-European *sak (cf. Sanskrit śaknóti 'to be able').
