Definition of crossover trial in English English dictionary: In crossover trials, each subject receives at least two different treatments In general, one group receives treatment A while the other receives treatment B At some point in the study, each group then crosses over to the other treatment; (Cochrane definition) A type of clinical trial comparing two or more interventions in which the participants, upon completion of the course of one treatment, are switched to another For example, for a comparison of treatments A and B, half the participants are randomly allocated to receive them in the order A, B and half to receive them in the order B, A A problem with this study design is that the effects of the first treatment may carry over into the period when the second is given; in crossover trials, each subject receives both treatments being compared (often the test drug for one period and the placebo for another period) Such trials are used for patients who have a stable, usually chronic, condition during both treatment period
