Some British speakers use moose to refer to the North American variety of this animal, and elk to refer to the European and Asian varieties. moose a large brown animal like a deer that has very large flat antlers (=horns that grow like branches) and lives in North America, northern Europe, and parts of Asia. Largest species (Alces alces) in the deer family (Cervidae), found in northern North America and Eurasia. It is called elk in Europe. Moose have long legs, a bulbous and mobile muzzle, short neck and tail, and a brown, shaggy, coarse coat. They stand 5-7 ft (1.5-2 m) tall and weigh up to 1,800 lb (820 kg).
