Han Chinese are a heterogenous ethnic group dominant in China and the largest single human ethnic group in the world. Han Chinese constitute about 92 percent of the population of the People's Republic of China and about 19 percent of the entire global human population. There is substantial genetic, linguistic, cultural and social diversity between its various subgroups, mainly due to thousands of years of regionalized assimilation of various ethnic groups and tribes in China. The Han Chinese are a subset of the Chinese nation (Zhonghua minzu). An alternate name that many Chinese peoples use to refer to themselves is "Descendants of the Dragon."

or Manhae born 1879, Korea died 1944, Korea Korean poet and religious and political leader. After participating in the failed Tonghak Uprising, he fled to Mount Solok and studied Buddhism. He became a priest in 1905 and set out to restore and nationalize Buddhism in Korea. In 1910, when Korea came under Japanese rule, he joined the independence movement. He helped draft a Korean Declaration of Independence in 1919 and was arrested and jailed for three years. In 1927 he led in the establishment of the Singanhoe society, a united national independence front. His best-known work is a volume of poetry, The Silence of the Lover

or Han Yü born 768, Henan province, China died 824, Chang'an Chinese poet and prose writer, the first proponent of Neo-Confucianism. An orphan, he joined the Chinese bureaucracy and served in several high government posts. He attacked Daoism and Buddhism, which were then at the height of their influence, and sought to restore Confucianism to its former status. He revived interest in the writings of Mencius and other neglected Confucian classics. His own works were written in a simple prose style unlike the elaborate manner popular at the time, and he became known as the "Prince of Letters

orig. Henricus Antonius van Meegeren born Oct. 10, 1889, Deventer, Neth. died Dec. 30, 1947, Amsterdam Dutch art forger. He forged at least 14 "Old Masters" and sold them at enormous profit; critics had hailed his Christ and the Disciples at Emmaus as a Johannes Vermeer masterpiece. His activities came to light after World War II, when a commission was established to restore to their owners artworks collected by Nazi leaders. Discovering a work purportedly by Vermeer among those amassed by Hermann Göring, the commission traced it to Meegeren. Charged with collaboration, he confessed. He died of a heart attack before his one-year sentence began
