A property of a fluid related to local angular rotation
Vorticity is a mathematical concept used in fluid dynamics. It can be related to the amount of "circulation" or "rotation" (or more strictly, the local angular rate of rotation) in a fluid. In fluid dynamics, vorticity is the curl of the fluid velocity. It can also be considered as the circulation per unit area at a point in a fluid flow field. It is a vector quantity, whose direction is along the axis of the fluid's rotation. For a two-dimensional flow, the vorticity vector is perpendicular to the plane. In the atmospheric sciences, vorticity is the rotation of air around a vertical axis. Vorticity is a vector quantity and the direction of the vector is given by the right-hand rule with the fingers of the right hand indicating the direction and curvature of the wind. When the vorticity vector points upward into the atmosphere, vorticity is positive; when it points downward into the earth it is negative. Vorticity in the atmosphere is therefore positive for counter-clockwise rotation (looking down onto the earth's surface), and negative for clockwise rotation
A vector measure of local rotation in a fluid flow, defined mathematically as the curl of the velocity vector, Ω = X V where Ω is the vorticity; V is the velocity; and is the del-operator
A measure of the amount of "spin" (or rotation) in the atmosphere (especially in a hurricane)
A measure of the amount of "spin" (or rotation) in the atmosphere
The measurement of the rotation of a small air parcel It has vorticity when the parcel spins as it moves along its path Although the axis of the rotation can extend in any direction, meteorologists are primarily concerned with the rotational motion about an axis that is perpendicular to the earth's surface If it does not spin, it is said to have zero vorticity In the Northern Hemisphere, the vorticity is positive when the parcel has a counterclockwise, or cyclonic, rotation It is negative when the parcel has clockwise, or anticyclonic, rotation
A fluid property defined as twice the local rate of rotation of a fluid element or the curl of the velocity field, i e where is the velocity vector In a rotating frame of reference like the earth, there is additionally a quantity known as the planetary vorticity, i e where is the velocity of the rotating frame at position Together these comprise the absolute vorticity, i e It is a three-dimensional property of the field of motion of a fluid, although in large-scale geophysical fluid dynamics the vorticity component in the horizontal plane (i e rotation about the vertical axis) is usually the only non-negligible component The vorticity equation governs the evolution of vorticity in a geophysical fluid
The vorticity is a measure of the rotation of air in a horizontal plane Positive (counter-clockwise or cyclonic) vorticity can be correlated with surface low development and upward vertical motion (in areas of positive vorticity advection)
The non-coaxial component of genral shear Can also be described as the rate of rotation of the incremental strain axes during progressive deformation
A measure of the spin or rotation of an air parcel Positive vorticity is indicative of cyclonic (counterclockwise) flow Negative vorticity represents anticyclonic (clockwise) flow
potential vorticity
a quantity which is proportional to the product of vorticity and stratification. When applied to air parcels, aids the understanding of cyclogenesis
