Belle Starr
orig. Myra Belle Shirley born Feb. 5, 1848, Washington county, Mo., U.S. died Feb. 3, 1889, near Briartown, Okla. U.S. outlaw. She grew up in Missouri and later moved to a farm at Scyene, near Dallas, Texas. She bore a child by the outlaw Cole Younger (1844-1916) and another by Jim Reed, with whom she rustled cattle and horses in Texas in 1869. She fashioned herself the "bandit queen," dressing in velvet and feathers or buckskin and moccasins. In 1880 she became the common-law wife of Sam Starr, and their Oklahoma ranch became an outlaws' hideout. Sam was killed in a gunfight in 1886, and Belle herself was later shot down near her ranch
David Starr Jordan
born Jan. 19, 1851, near Gainesville, N.Y., U.S. died Sept. 19, 1931, Stanford, Calif. U.S. educator and ichthyologist. He studied at Cornell University and taught at universities in Indiana until 1885, when he became president of Indiana University. In 1891 he became the first president of Stanford University, and served until 1913. His extensive field trips led to his naming 1,085 genera and more than 2,500 species of fishes. He was coauthor (with B.W. Evermann) of The Fishes of North and Middle America (1896-1900) and author of Manual of the Vertebrates of the Northern United States (13 editions, 1876-1929). He devoted his later career mainly to the cause of international peace, acting as chief director of the World Peace Foundation

Sir Leander Starr Jameson
born Feb. 9, 1853, Edinburgh, Scot. died Nov. 26, 1917, London, Eng. British administrator in southern Africa. As Cecil Rhodes's representative, Jameson successfully negotiated mineral concessions in Matabeleland and Mashonaland (present-day Zimbabwe) before becoming the first administrator of the new colony of Rhodesia in 1893. In 1895 Rhodes and Jameson plotted with Uitlander (British) leaders in the Transvaal to overthrow the Boer government of Paul Kruger; the original plan was postponed, but Jameson carried out his own invasion and was quickly captured with all his men. After imprisonment in England, he returned to participate in South African politics
