A British-administered island in the southern Atlantic Ocean east of Cape Horn. A dependency of the Falkland Islands, it was claimed by Capt. James Cook in 1775. an island in the South Atlantic, East of Cape Horn, which is under British control. Nobody lives there except British soldiers and a few scientists. James Cook claimed it for Britain in 1775, and Ernest Shackleton first crossed it in 1916 while in search of aid for his ill-fated expedition; Shackleton died on the island on a later expedition and was buried there. Formerly a whaling base, it is now the site of an Antarctic research station
