Ekolojinin konusu Schröter tarafından otekoloji ve sinekoloji olmak üzere iki alt bölüme ayrılmıştır.Ekoloji,çevre koşullarının incelenmesini ve bitki türlerinin adaptasyonunu tek tek ele alırsa otekoloji topluluklar halinde ele alırsa sinekoloji adını alır.2. Aynı türe ait birey veya bireylerin çevre ile olan ilişkilerini inceleyen ekoloji dalına birey ekolojisi (otekoloji) denir. Bir populasyonun yapısını, gelişimini, değişimini ve bunların nedenlerini inceleyen ekoloji dalına popülasyon ekolojisi (demokoloji) denir ve çeşitli türlere ait bireylerin bolluk ve değişim nedenlerini araştırır. Kommuniteyi oluşturan bireylerin çevreleri ile olan ilişkilerini inceleyen ekoloji dalına ise ekosistem ekolojisi(sinekoloji) adı verilir
