Also known as ‘long sight’ A refractive error of the eye in which light is brought to focus behind the retina (corrected using positive lenses) Uncorrected hypermetropia may cause problems with near work, for example headaches when reading Significant, uncorrected hypermetropia in childhood may cause other more serious problems
{i} far-sightedness, ability to see distant objects more clearly than near ones (abnormal condition of the eyes)
A condition of the eye in which, through shortness of the eyeball or fault of the refractive media, the rays of light come to a focus behind the retina; farsightedness; called also hyperopia
This is a refractive condition of the eye in which distant objects are focused behind the retina when the accommodation is relaxed Therefore a long-sighted (hypermetropic) person can usually see things in the far distance quite well, but cannot focus on objects that are close up ie for reading or knitting The nearer the object the more difficult it is to focus The eye is usually able to accommodate to this and can with some effort focus on close objects However, the worse the condition the greater the strain on the eye which can result in headaches and eye strain This condition can be eased and corrected by the use of a plus powered lens
Refractive error where the principal focus is behind the eye (so-called 'long sight')
long sight, which may manifest itself as poor near vision The retinal image is blurred because the eyeball is too short or the power of the refracting elements is too weak Young hypermetropes can accommodate to increase the positive power of the eye and overcome some or all of their hypermetropia Older hypermetropes may require a refractive correction at both distance and near
