A medical condition in which the sufferer experiences seizures (or convulsions) and blackouts
{n} a convulsion with the loss of sense
A disturbance in the electrochemical activity of the discharging cells of the brain produced by a variety of neurological disorders The causes are not clear These electrochemical disturbances usually result in a seizure of some degree Petit mal - a mild form in which dizziness or staring into space takes place Grand mal - a seizure in which there are severe convulsions and loss of consciousness or coma Jacksonian - spasms mainly limited to one side of the body and often to one group of muscles Psychomotor - patient performs motor acts which he cannot remember having done
Epilepsy is a brain condition which causes a person to suddenly lose consciousness and sometimes to have fits. a medical condition affecting your brain, that can make you suddenly become unconscious or unable to control your movements for a short time (épilepsie, from epilepsia, from epilambanein ). Neurological disorder caused by paroxysmal malfunction of neurons in the brain (seizures). It is characterized by strange movements or sensations in parts of the body, odd behaviours, emotional disturbances, and sometimes convulsions and momentary lapses of consciousness. Seizures may result from abnormal electrical activity in most or all of the brain (generalized), or they may originate in a specific brain area (partial). Causes include brain tumours, infections, genetic or developmental abnormalities, stroke, and head trauma, although no cause can be found in most cases. Treatment is usually with anticonvulsant medications; brain surgery may be beneficial if drugs cannot control seizures
Disorder characterized by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain, causing abnormal sensation, movement or level of consciousness
a brain disorder involving recurrent seizures
—A disorder of the nervous system in which abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes seizures (sudden uncontrolled waves of electrical activity in the brain, causing involuntary movement or loss of consciousness)
Recurrent seizures in the absence of any provoking factors, such as infection, low blood sugar, or poisoning
The "falling sickness,"
A disorder of the nervous system, characterised either by mild, episodic loss of attention or sleepiness or by severe convulsions with loss of consciousness
A neurological disorder which results in recurrent seizures
A sudden discharge of energy from the brain, resulting in convulsion and mild to severe changes in the level of consciousness (Worthington, 1983)
{i} neurological disorder characterized by seizures
so called because the patient falls suddenly to the ground; a disease characterized by paroxysms (or fits) occurring at interval and attended by sudden loss of consciousness, and convulsive motions of the muscles
癲癇、羊顛瘋
Sudden excitation that spreads through the brain and causes recurrent seizures that can severely impair a person's quality of life It affects some 100 million people worldwide, and about 30% of those stricken have a severe form of the disease that results in more than 100 seizures per day
a disorder of the central nervous system characterized by loss of consciousness and convulsions
recurrent seizures, excluding ones caused solely by fever
also known as seizure disorder Individuals with epilepsy experience seizures, which are the result of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain A seizure may cause a physical convulsion, minor physical signs, thought disturbances, or a combination of symptoms
Derives from the Greek word to be seized It is a generic term that refers to a wide variety of seizure conditions
A disorder of the nervous system
Periodic convulsions or seizures that are caused by a disorder of the nervous system
a condition in which there is a problem with the brain that causes long-term seizures in the child
disorder associated with the disturbed electrical discharges in the central nervous system that cause convulsions
a sudden transitory 'electrical' disturbance of brain function it may be associated with a period of unconsciousness, disturbance of consciousness, twitching, sensory disturbance, urinary incontinence
a condition in which a person can occasionally have a convulsion
A condition characterized by recurrent seizures that are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain Seizures can occur for many reasons, including damage to the brain due to infection, injury, birth trauma, tumor, stroke, drug intoxication, and chemical imbalance Epilepsy is usually treated with antiepileptic drugs to control the seizures
Any of various disorders marked by disturbed electrical rhythms of the central nervous system and typically manifested by convulsive attacks usually with clouding of consciousness
Result from abnormal electrical activity of the brain and usually results in loss of consciousness
The "falling sickness," so called because the patient falls suddenly to the ground; a disease characterized by paroxysms (or fits) occurring at interval and attended by sudden loss of consciousness, and convulsive motions of the muscles
(ep·i·lep·sy) NOUN: Any of various neurological disorders characterized by sudden recurring attacks of motor, sensory, or psychic malfunction with or without loss of consciousness or convulsive seizures
falling sickness

Bru. 'T is very like: he hath the falling sickness.

akinetic epilepsy
epilepsy characterized by akinesia
cortical epilepsy
epilepsy in which the attack begins with an isolated disturbance of cerebral function (as a twitching of a limb or an illusory sensation or a mental disturbance)
grand mal epilepsy
epilepsy in which the attack involves loss of consciousness and tonic spasms of the musculature followed by generalized jerking
jacksonian epilepsy
focal epilepsy in which the attack usually moves from distal to proximal limb muscles on the same side of the body
musicogenic epilepsy
reflex epilepsy induced by music
myoclonus epilepsy
epilepsy characterized by clonus of muscle groups and progressive mental deterioration and genetic origin
petit mal epilepsy
epilepsy characterized by paroxysmal attacks of brief clouding of consciousness (a possible other abnormalities)
photogenic epilepsy
reflex epilepsy induced by a flickering light
posttraumatic epilepsy
a convulsive epileptic state caused by a head injury
procursive epilepsy
epilepsy in which a seizure is induced by whirling or running
psychomotor epilepsy
epilepsy characterized clinically by impairment of consciousness and amnesia for the episode; often involves purposeful movements of the arms and legs and sometimes hallucinations
reflex epilepsy
a form of epilepsy in which attacks are induced by peripheral stimulation
sensory epilepsy
focal epilepsy initiated by somatosensory phenomena
the Israel League against Epilepsy
Israeli organization that wants to fight against the disease of epilepsy
tonic epilepsy
epilepsy in which the body is rigid during the seizure
