Alternate etymology is from Celtic; compare Breton krampoez (“thin, flat cake”). Sense of “desirable woman” attested 1936, possibly as cockney rhyming slang for strumpet; alternatively, compare tart (“loose woman, prostitute”) (itself possibly cockney rhyming slang for heart or sweetheart).
