A French overseas territory in the south-central Pacific Ocean comprising some 120 islands, including the Society, Marquesas, and Austral islands and the Tuamotu archipelago. It was organized as a territory in 1903. Papeete, on the island of Tahiti, is the capital. It became an overseas territory of France after World War II and was granted partial autonomy in 1977
