To generate significant amounts of emission, fields of 1 volt per nanometre (1 V/nm, or 1 000 000 000 volts per metre) or more are required. The exact field needed depends both on the nature of the materials involved and on the amount of electron current being generated. No external stimulation (in particular, no heating) is needed
