born Jan. 15, 1923, near Tan-shui, Taiwan First Taiwan-born president (1988-2000) of Taiwan (Republic of China). He became president in 1988 after the death of Chiang Ching-kuo. He was reelected in 1990 and won a landslide victory in 1996 in Taiwan's first direct presidential election. Wang Hui
born 1632, Jiangsu province, China died 1717 Chinese artist who was the paramount member of the group of Chinese painters known as the Four Wangs (including Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, and Wang Yuanqi). Wang Hui, much like the other Wangs, primarily painted landscapes. In his best works he built up an intense web of rhythmic brushwork, while at the same time maintaining a composition's sense of unity and clarity. His fame reached the court in Beijing, and in 1691-98 he was commissioned to supervise the production of a series of hand scrolls commemorating the Kangxi emperor's tour of the South
Yang Hui
literary name Qianguang flourished 1261-75, Qiantang, Zhejiang province, China Mathematician active in the great flowering of Chinese mathematics during the Southern Song dynasty. His books are among the few contemporary Chinese mathematics works to survive. A collected edition of his works (1378) was transmitted farther to the east, where it was particularly influential. In Korea it was reprinted during the reign of Sejong in 1433, and it was copied again by the Japanese mathematician Seki Takakazu
