English - English
Any of a number of materials, such foam, batting, or wooden blocks, built into the interior of a wall in order to inhibit the spread of fire, in North America most commonly taking the form of 16-inch pieces of 2x4 affixed horizontally in each of the spaces between the vertical studs within a wall

If you own or are building a frame house, make sure that it is adequately fire stopped. Fire stops are blocks of wood, brick or gypsum board placed between the walls and partitions at each floor level and at the eaves level. These blocks retard the upward passage of fire between the studs in hollow walls.
