Destructive programs that disrupt the normal functioning of computer systems
The smallest life forms known, that are not cellular in nature They live inside the cells of animals, plants and bacteria and often cause disease They are made up of a chromosome surrounded by a protein shell
Probably the most well-known threat is computer viruses A virus is a small program that can copy itself to other computers This way it can spread quickly from one system to the next Viruses range from harmless messages to erasing all of your data
Extremely small and simple life-forms, made merely of a protein shell and a genome A virus reproduces by inserting its genome into the cells of other life-forms As those cells duplicate, so does the virus
programs capable of replicating themselves with the intent to harm computer systems
A class of ultramicroscopic, filterable, infectious agents, chiefly protein, which are typically inert except when in contact with certain living cells

virus
{n} foul matter from ulcers, poison
virus
A program that is very damaging to your computer should it infect your system Running an antivirus program such as Inoculate, is very beneficial in stopping the threat of computer meltdown You can read more about it here on our Trojans, Viruses and Worms reference page
virus
Small program that attaches itself to a legitimate program When the legitimate program runs, the virus copies itself onto other legitimate programs in a form of reproduction
virus
-A malicious program that replicates itself and may cause damage to a computer system by attacking or attaching itself to boot information, another program or a document that uses macros
virus
A virus is software used to infect a computer Virus code is usually buried within the code of another program Once the program is executed the virus is activated and attaches copies of itself to other programs in the system Infected programs copy the virus to other programs The effects of a virus can range from harmless messages that appear on screen to destruction of data, either right away or on a set date File attachments in e-mail messages are a common source of virus One rule of thumb is to NEVER double click (execute) an attachment to a e-mail unless you are sure who it is from and that it is safe to do so
virus
The special contagion, inappreciable to the senses and acting in exceedingly minute quantities, by which a disease is introduced into the organism and maintained there
virus

virus
A small, self-replicating, malicious program that attaches itself to an executable file or vulnerable application and delivers a payload that ranges from annoying to extremely destructive A file virus executes when an infected file is accessed A macro virus infects the executable code embedded in Microsoft® Office® programs that allows users to generate macros
virus
A piece of programming code inserted into other programming to cause some unexpected and usually undesirable event, such as lost or damaged files Viruses can be transmitted by downloading programming from other sites or be present on a diskette The source of the file you're downloading or of a diskette you've received is often unaware of the virus The virus lies dormant until circumstances cause its code to be executed by the computer
virus
a piece of programming code usually disguised as something else that causes some unexpected and, for the victim, usually undesirable event and which is often designed so that it is automatically spread to other computer users Viruses can be transmitted by sending them as attachments to an e-mail note, by downloading infected programming from other sites, or be present on a diskette or CD The best protection against a virus is to know the origin of each program or file you load into your computer or open from your e-mail program
virus
A computer virus
virus
A self-replicating program that is hidden in another piece of computer code, such as an email
virus
A program designed to replicate itself and spread to other computers Some viruses additionally are designed to damage data or halt operations on a system Viruses can spread through diskettes, CD-ROMs, email attachments, and the Internet (See the Quick Tip on viruses at http: //xbase ucdavis edu/itx/article cfm?art=307 )
virus
A noncellular biological entity that can reproduce only within a host cell Viruses consist of nucleic acid covered by protein; some animal viruses are also surrounded by membrane Inside the infected cell, the virus uses the synthetic capability of the host to produce progeny virus See also: cloning vector Return to Top

virus
A submicroscopic infectious organism, now understood to be a non-cellular structure consisting of a core of DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat that requires a living cell to replicate - often causes disease in the host organism
virus
In computer technology, a virus is a program that introduces itself into a system, altering or destroying the information stored in the system. Microscopic, simple infectious agent that can multiply only in living cells of animals, plants, or bacteria. Viruses are much smaller than bacteria and consist of a single-or double-stranded nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein shell called a capsid; some viruses also have an outer envelope composed of lipids and proteins. They vary in shape. The two main classes are RNA viruses (see retrovirus) and DNA viruses. Outside of a living cell, a virus is an inactive particle, but within an appropriate host cell it becomes active, capable of taking over the cell's metabolic machinery for the production of new virus particles (virions). Some animal viruses produce latent infections, in which the virus persists in a quiet state, becoming periodically active in acute episodes, as in the case of the herpes simplex virus. An animal can respond to a viral infection in various ways, including fever, secretion of interferon, and attack by the immune system. Many human diseases, including influenza, the common cold, and AIDS, as well as many economically important plant and animal diseases, are caused by viruses. Successful vaccines have been developed to combat such viral diseases as measles, mumps, poliomyelitis, smallpox, and rubella. Drug therapy is generally not useful in controlling established viral infections, since drugs that inhibit viral development also inhibit the functions of the host cell. virus
A computer virus is a little program, created by mean human beings, the purpose of which is to replicate and attach itself to your computer files and folders, and (usually) cause some kind of damage to your computer Computer viruses can be really mean Read protecting your computer from virus to learn more
virus
A computer virus is an insidious piece of software that infects other software and moves from computer to computer when software is transferred A virus may compound itself once it's inside your computer, thereby destroying software programs and a great deal of data, or it may do other nasty things Some viruses are benign Modems can transmit viruses, but illegally copied or "bootleg" diskettes are the most likely carriers Virus protection software is the best defense, and is available commercially or as freeware/shareware
virus
Viruses are an unfortunate fact of life in the computer world, and they can travel across any means of connecting computers, like modems and networks The best thing to do is to use anti-virus software, like McAfee or Norton AntiVirus, to keep you safe However, you can't catch a virus just from reading an e-mail message Pranksters periodically send out "warnings" about just such a thing, like the notorious "Good Times" virus hoax File attachments can carry viruses, but not the actual e-mail itself, so just don't download file attachments from anyone you don't know or trust McAfee keeps a list of known Virus Hoaxes, so if you have any questions or concerns about viruses that's a good place to check Back to Top
virus
a harmful or corrupting agency; "bigotry is a virus that must not be allowed to spread"; "the virus of jealousy is latent in everyone
virus
A software program that attaches itself to another program in computer memory or on a disk, and spreads from one program to another Viruses can cause damage to data, make the computer crash, display messages, or lie dormant
virus
Contagious or poisonous matter, as of specific ulcers, the bite of snakes, etc
virus
{i} microorganism which functions as an infectious agent; computer program which is intended to be spread surreptitiously between computers and usually causes damage (Computers)
virus
A program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes Most viruses can also replicate themselves and spread to other computers All computer viruses are man made Antivirus programs periodically check your computer system for the best-known types of viruses
virus
These are programs that can be downloaded onto your computer or network from the Internet Some are harmless, others are programmed to destroy your system, trash your files and disable your software No kidding So be careful Use anti-virus programs They take a few extra minutes every day to use, but the protection is worth it
virus
a software program capable of reproducing itself and usually capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same computer; "a true virus cannot spread to another computer without human assistance"
virus
Any morbid corrupting quality in intellectual or moral conditions; something that poisons the mind or the soul; as, the virus of obscene books
virus
A small computer program designed to make copies of itself over and over It attaches to other programs and reproduces when the other programs are run You can get "infected" by a virus by downloading infected files or programs from a network, or by inserting an infected disk into your computer Some are relatively harmless, others can crash whole computer systems
virus
This is a piece of code, or whole program, that is designed to be loaded onto a computer without the user's knowledge for malicious intent Virii have many forms, and can do many things, such as just type a single letter no matter which key is pressed on the keyboard, to wiping out hard drives completely and making the whole computer lock up and not be able to be accessed Some of the worst viruses actually attach themselves automatically to email lists and auto-send themselves so that they can infect as many people as possible The Trojan virus is one such example of these malicious programs Many times people download virii unbeknownst to them just by opening the infected email This starts the cycle and then their computer is infected, and it is sent to everyone else on their contact list There are many software packages out that help remove these harmful programs Norton Antivirus is probably the most popular of these A worm is a type of virus
virus
A virus is a piece of software designed and written to make additional copies of itself and spread from location to location, typically without user knowledge or permission Such stealth qualities are now found in both viruses infecting files and those infecting boot areas There are computer viruses that were written for several operating systems like DOS, Windows, Amiga, Mac, Atari, and UNIX Macro viruses are a new class of viruses that do not infect boot areas or files with the EXE or COM extensions Instead, they infect documents; when Word loads the document, it executes any "autoexecute" macro in the file (see Macro Virus) Some viruses cause damage, but not all do More than 20,000 have been identified, and 250 new ones are created every month, according to the International Computer Security Association With numbers like those, it's safe to say that most organizations will deal regularly with virus outbreaks No one who uses computers is immune from viruses
virus
A Virus is a small program that can cause harm to your computer (by deleting files for example) To avoid getting a virus you should only download software from well-known or trusted sources Anti-virus software is available and should be installed on your computer Viruses can be transferred as e-mail attachments but not as part of the message itself
virus
A program that when loaded infects, alters or destroys other programs Some virus programs cause major trouble and some are nothing more than annoying pranks
