The evolutionary history of an organism

The phylogeny of this starfish provides an understanding of its distribution.

The historical development of a human social or racial group

Understanding the phylogeny of this musical group helps us understand its music.

A phylogenetic diagram
Clad The historical development of a group of related taxa In stemmatics, a phylogeny is represented as the family tree of a set of manuscripts
Evolutionary relationships within and between taxonomic levels, particularly the patterns of lines of descent Phylogenetics -The taxonomical classification of organisms based on their degree of evolutionary relatedness Phylogenetic tree - A variety of dendrogram (diagram) in which organisms are shown arranged on branches that link them according to their relatedness and evolutionary descent
{i} descent or evolutionary development of a species
The history of genealogical development; the race history of an animal or vegetable type; the historic exolution of the phylon or tribe, in distinction from ontogeny, or the development of the individual organism, and from biogenesis, or life development generally
1 The history of descent of a species
the connections between all groups of organisms as understood by ancestor/descendant relationships These relationships is expressed in diagrams called cladograms, which are like genealogies of species
The 'pedigree' of a species - the branches of the ancestral tree of species from which the current species derives A related species is derived from a common ancestor There are two kinds of phylogenies - branching, or divergent, phylogenies, and merging, or reticulate, phylogenies Hybridisation of two species is a case of reticulation if the result is a viable and reproductively persistent form
The history of the evolution of a species or group The evolutionary development and history of a species or higher taxonomic grouping of organisms Sometimes called a family tree
The course of evolutionary change within a related group of organisms
(biology) the sequence of events involved in the evolutionary development of a species or taxonomic group of organisms
The unique historical relationship (resulting from evolution) among terminal taxa, represented as a tree (cf cladogram)
The evolutionary relationships among organisms; the patterns of lineage branching produced by the true evolutionary history of the organisms being considered
study of evolutionary origins
The evolution of an animal or plant type Related to the construction of an evolutionary tree
The evolutionary history of a particular taxonomic group
History of the evolution of a species or group, especially lines of descent and relationships among broad groups. The fundamental proposition is that plants or animals of different species descended from common ancestors. Because the evidence for such relationships is almost always incomplete, most judgments of phylogenicity are based on indirect evidence and cautious speculation. Modern taxonomy, the science of classifying organisms, is based on phylogeny. Early taxonomic systems had no theoretical basis; organisms were grouped according to apparent similarity. Biologists who propose a phylogeny obtain evidence from the fields of paleontology, comparative anatomy, comparative embryology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The data and conclusions of phylogeny indicate that today's living creatures are the product of a historical process of evolution and that degrees of resemblance within and between groups correspond to degrees of relationship by descent from common ancestors. See also phylogenetic tree
The classification structure used to organize all forms of life, and the relative position on that structure
genealogy of species; the pattern of ancestry and descent of species in evolution
history or evolutionary development of any plant or animal species
The history or evolution (origin and development) of a closely (genetically) related group of organisms, often depicted in a treelike diagram [3: The tree of life]; [3: CLASSIFICATION AND PHYLOGENY]; [3: Phylogeny ]; [3: UCMP glossary of phylogenetic terms ]
ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny
The physical, cultural, moral, or intellectual development of each individual passes through stages similar to the developmental stages of that individual's species, society, or civilization

For even if we accept that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, those responsible for the drafting of ancient legal documents were not children, and are hardly to be endowed with some form of infantile mentality.
