One of the earliest civilizations to develop in the Nile River Valley, Kushite states rose to power before a period of Egyptian incursion into the area. People in Kush were called Kushites

In the early 6th century BC the Kushite kingdom's capital was transferred to Meroë , where the Kushites ruled for another 900 years
