The sinking of pigments or other solid matter in a paint on standing in a container, with the subsequent accumulation on the bottom of the container
The sinking of pigments, extenders or other solid matter in a paint, on standing in a container, with a consequent accumulation on the bottom of the can
That which settles at the bottom of a liquid; lees; dregs; sediment
The act of one who, or that which, settles; the act of establishing one's self, of colonizing, subsiding, adjusting, etc
Allowing sewage or wastewater to sit in a holding basin for a period of time while the larger and heavier particles settle to the bottom before the liquid with its solutes and some smaller particulates is sent for further treatment or directly to the environment
{i} arrangement, resolution; colonization, act of inhabiting a new area
In building construction, the gradual subsiding of a structure as the soil beneath its foundation consolidates under loading. This may continue for several years after the structure's completion. Primary consolidation occurs as water is squeezed out from the voids within the soil mass. Secondary consolidation results from adjustments in the internal structure of the soil mass under a sustained load. Whenever the possibility of settlement exists, care must be taken to choose a structural system and foundation capable of adapting. Fixed-end beams present a problem as they are incapable of rotating under uneven settlement loads and bend in response to the stress; simply supported beams, the ends of which act as hinges, will rotate slightly and remain straight. Special columns with jacking devices may then be used to level the beams. Floating foundations and piles are often used to overcome the problems of building on yielding soils. See also soil mechanics
Paint separation in which pigments and other solids accumulate at the bottom of the container
Separation of solids from suspension in a fluid of lower or segregation of different-sized particles due to gravity
The separation of a pigment or other solid ingredient from a coating material upon standing
To become fixed, resolved, or established
the process of subsidence and deposition of suspended matter carried by water, wastewater, or other liquids It is usually accomplished by reducing the velocity of the liquid below the point that it can transport the suspended material Also called sedimentation
