[ 'ben-z&-w&n, -"wEn; -" ] (noun.) 1562. Compare French benjoin, Spanish benjuí and Portuguese beijoin, all from Arabic لبان جاوي (lubān jāwī, “benzoin”), incense from Sumatra (called Java in Arabic), the first syllable being lost.
