hollow longitudinal dorsal tube formed in the folding and subsequent fusion of the opposite ectodermal folds in the embryo that gives rise to the brain and spinal cord
The tubular embryonic tissue from which the brain and spinal cord develop Very serious congenital defects result from failure of this tube to close during the process of growth and differentiation
A structure in early fetal life that develops into the brain, spinal cord, spinal nerves and spine
the tube in the back of the developing baby that becomes the spinal cord and spine
A tubular structure formed by fission of the neural groove from overlying ectoderm The brain and spinal cord develop from neural tube
A dorsal tubular structure in the vertebrate embryo formed by longitudinal folding of the neural plate and differentiating into the brain and spinal cord
the part of the embryo that becomes the brain and spinal cord
Tube filled with CSF formed when the lips of the neural groove fuse Develops into the CNS
Embryological structure which gives rise to the brain and spinal cord
A tube of ectoderm in the embryo that will form the spinal cord
a tube of ectodermal tissue in the embryo from which the brain and spinal cord develop
neural tube defect
Any of various congenital defects of the brain and spinal cord, such as spina bifida, resulting from incomplete closing of the neural tube in an embryo. Congenital defect of the brain or spinal cord from abnormal growth of their precursor, the neural tube (see embryology), usually with spine or skull defects. The tube may fail to close properly, have parts missing, or have a blockage (see hydrocephalus). In spina bifida, vertebrae are open over the back of the spinal cord, usually at the base. This may not affect function if no further defects (local absence of skin or meninges, protrusion of tissue, defect opening into the spinal cord) exist. The more serious forms can cause paralysis and impair bladder and bowel function. In encephalocele, a meningeal sac containing brain tissue protrudes from the skull. The effects depend on the amount of tissue involved. Adequate folic-acid intake by women of childbearing age reduces the risk of neural tube defects. Early surgery can prevent or minimize disability
