Stan Getz: orig. Stanley Gayetzby born Feb. 2, 1927, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S. died June 6, 1991, Malibu, Calif. U.S. jazz saxophonist. Getz was influenced by Lester Young and became known for his light tone and ethereal approach while performing as one of the "Four Brothers" of Woody Herman's Second Herd (1947-49). With the advent of the cool jazz of the 1950s, he began to dominate jazz popularity polls, and his incorporation of Brazilian bossa nova music in the early 1960s brought him to a wider public and commercial success
Stan Kenton: born Feb. 19, 1912, Wichita, Kan., U.S. died Aug. 25, 1979, Los Angeles, Calif. U.S. pianist, composer, arranger, and leader of one of the most popular and controversial big bands in jazz. Kenton formed his first band in 1941. The group exhibited the influence of Jimmy Lunceford's precise brass and gained a reputation for a bombastic orchestral approach. His players included saxophonist Art Pepper (1925-82), trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, drummer Shelly Manne (1920-84), and singers Anita O'Day (b. 1919) and June Christy (1925-90). His efforts to organize the training of student musicians represent some of the earliest instances of formal jazz education
Stan Musial: born Nov. 21, 1920, Donora, Pa., U.S. U.S. baseball player. Musial played his entire career for the St. Louis Cardinals (1941-63), starting as a pitcher but switching to the outfield and ultimately to first base. A left-handed batter, "Stan the Man" became one of the game's great hitters. His lifetime totals of hits (3,630), runs (1,949), and times at bat were second only to those of Ty Cobb, his total of runs batted in (1,951) was the fourth-highest of all time, and his total of extra-base hits (1,477) was only surpassed later by Hank Aaron. Popular among fans for his unfailing graciousness, he became a Cardinals executive after retirement

U.S. film comedians. Laurel performed in circuses and vaudeville before settling in the U.S. (1910), where he began appearing in silent movies. Hardy, son of a Georgia lawyer, owned a movie house and acted in silent comedy films from 1913. They joined Hal Roach's studio in 1926 and began performing together in early short films such as Putting Pants on Philip (1927). They made more than 100 comedies, including Leave 'em Laughing (1928), The Music Box (1932), Sons of the Desert (1933), and Way Out West (1937), and are considered Hollywood's first great comedy team. The skinny Laurel played the bumbling and innocent foil to the heavy, pompous Hardy as they converted simple, everyday situations into disastrous tangles of stupidity
