Etymology: [ 'dred ] (verb.) before 12th century. Middle English dreden from Old English drǣdan (“to fear, caution against”), aphetic form of ādrǣdan, ondrǣdan (“to advise or counsel against”) from and- "against" + rǣdan "to counsel, advise".
