penicillin
Penicillin is a drug that kills bacteria and is used to treat infections. a type of medicine that is used to treat infections caused by bacteria (Penicillium name of a type of mold, from penicillus; PENCIL). Antibiotic derived from the Penicillium mold. It was discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming; by 1940, Howard Walter Florey, Ernst Boris Chain, and others had produced commercial quantities that proved vital to the treatment of war casualties, making penicillin the first successful antibiotic for human bacterial infections. Many natural and semisynthetic (ampicillin, amoxicillin) variants have since been produced. All work by inhibiting the enzymes responsible for bacterial cell wall synthesis (and therefore do not work against microorganisms without cell walls or with certain variant cell walls; e.g., the tuberculosis bacillus). Among the bacteria susceptible to penicillin are those causing strep throat, spinal meningitis, gas gangrene, and syphilis. Overuse has led to drug resistance in some strains. Penicillin's chief side effect is allergy, which can be life-threatening
penicillin
any of various antibiotics obtained from penicillium molds (or produced synthetically) and used in the treatment of various infections and diseases
penicillin G
The most commonly used penicillin compound, used primarily in the form of its stable salts to treat infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. Also called benzylpenicillin
penicillin V
A semisynthetic penicillin that is stable even in high humidity, resists destruction by gastric juice, and is therefore effective when taken orally
penicillin f
the first form of penicillin that was isolated in Great Britain
penicillin g
the penicillin that constitutes the principal component of many commercial antibiotics
penicillin o
a penicillin that is similar in antibiotic action to penicillin G but is obtained differently
penicillin v
a crystalline penicillin similar in action to penicillin G but more resistant to the action of gastric acids
penicillin v potassium
a form of penicillin V (trade name Ledercillin VK)
penicillin-resistant
unaffected by penicillin; "penicillin-resistant bacteria
penicillin-resistant bacteria
bacteria that are unaffected by penicillin
