Gerrit Dou
or Gerard Dou born April 7, 1613, Leiden, Neth. died Feb. 9, 1675, Leiden Dutch painter. From 1628 to 1631 he studied with Rembrandt, adopting his subject matter, careful draftsmanship, and dramatic treatment of light and shadow. When Rembrandt left Leiden, Dou developed his own style, painting smooth, meticulously detailed, small-scale domestic interiors and portraits. He used the "frame within a frame" device of surrounding his figures by a window or curtain and excelled at scenes lit by candlelight. With Jan Steen he was among the founders of the Guild of St. Luke at Leiden (1648)
Gerrit Rietveld
born June 24, 1888, Utrecht, Neth. died June 25, 1964, Utrecht Dutch architect and furniture designer. He was an apprentice in his father's cabinetmaking business (1899-1906) and later studied architecture in Utrecht. In 1918 he created his famous red-and-blue armchair, which, with its emphasis on geometry and use of primary colours, became a symbol of De Stijl. His masterpiece is the Schroeder House in Utrecht (1924), remarkable for its interplay of right-angle forms, planes, and lines, and for its use of primary colours
Gerrit Smith
born March 6, 1797, Utica, N.Y., U.S. died Dec. 28, 1874, New York, N.Y. U.S. reformer and philanthropist. Born into a wealthy family, he became active in the temperance movement (1828) and built one of the first U.S. temperance hotels at Peterboro, N.Y. From 1835 he was an active abolitionist, and he made his hotel a stop on the Underground Railroad. He helped form the Liberty Party and was its unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1848 and 1852. He paid the legal expenses of many slaves arrested under the Fugitive Slave Acts. He gave a farm to his friend John Brown and financed some of Brown's activities

Gerrit van Honthorst
known as Gherardo delle Notti (Italian: "Gerard of the Night Scenes") born Nov. 4, 1590, Utrecht, Neth. died April 27, 1656, Utrecht Dutch painter. During 10 years in Italy ( 1610-20) he enjoyed the patronage of the nobility and assimilated the Baroque style of Caravaggio. The dramatic effects of artificial light in his early paintings, as in such nocturnal scenes as Supper Party (1620), earned him his nickname. He was court painter at The Hague from 1637 to 1652. Some of Rembrandt's early works were inspired by his use of chiaroscuro. With Hendrik Terbrugghen, he was a leader of the Utrecht school
