İlk sene içerisinde de; Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ndeki tüm okullar facebook'da mevcuttu. Üyeler önceleri sadece mevzu bahis okulun e-mail adresiyle (.edu, .ac.uk vs.) üye olabiliyordu. Daha sonrasında da ağ içine liseler ve bazı büyük şirketlerde katıldı. 11 Eylül 2006 tarihinde ise facebook tüm e-mail adreslerine, bazı yaş sınırlandırmalarıyla açıldı. Kullanıcılar diledikleri ağlara; liseleri, çalışma yerleri ya da yaşadığı yerler itibariyle katılım gösterebilmektedirler.Facebook ismini "paper facebooks"'dan alır. Bu form A.B.D. üniversitelerinde okulların öğrencilerine, öğretmenlere ve çalışanlara doldurduğu onları tanıtan bir formdur
