Roscoe Conkling
(b. Oct. 30, 1829, Albany, N.Y., U.S. d. April 18, 1888, New York, N.Y.) U.S. politician. He was a lawyer, orator, and leader of the Whig Party. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1859-65) and Senate (1867-81). As a leader of the Radical Republicans, he supported severe Reconstruction measures. Resisting efforts by Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes to achieve civil service reform, he retained control of New York state's patronage system. At the 1880 Republican convention, he led the Stalwart faction in supporting former Pres. Ulysses S. Grant. In 1881 he resigned from the Senate in a patronage dispute with Pres. James Garfield
Roscoe Pound
born Oct. 27, 1870, Lincoln, Neb., U.S. died July 1, 1964, Cambridge, Mass. U.S. legal educator and botanist. After studying botany at the University of Nebraska and law at Harvard University (1889-90), he was admitted to the Nebraska bar, and he practiced law while also teaching at the state university (1890-1903). At the University of Nebraska he directed the state botanical survey (1892-1903) and discovered a rare fungus (Roscopoundia). He later taught at several law schools, most notably Harvard (1910-37), where he also served as dean (1916-36), instituting many reforms. He was perhaps the chief U.S. advocate of sociological jurisprudence, which holds that statutes and court decisions are affected by social conditions; his ideas apparently influenced the New Deal programs of Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt. After World War II he helped reorganize the judicial system of Taiwan
Edward Egbert Roscoe Murrow
born April 25, 1908, Greensboro, N.C., U.S. died April 27, 1965, Pawling, N.Y. U.S. radio and television broadcaster. Murrow joined CBS in 1935 and two years later became head of its European Bureau. He became famous for his eyewitness reports of World War II events such as the German occupation of Austria. After the war, with Fred Friendly, he produced Hear It Now, an authoritative radio news digest, and for television the comparable See It Now. He also produced Person to Person and other television programs. In the 1950s he was an influential force for the free dissemination of information, producing a notable exposé of the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy that contributed to the demise of McCarthyism
