The U.S. then assisted Britain with the lend-lease program. Allied shipping losses were severe, but the Allies succeeded in tightening their blockade of Axis Europe and combating the Axis war on shipping. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co: U.S. corporation operating one of the largest supermarket chains in the U.S., mostly under the A&P name. The company had its start in 1859, when the Great American Tea Co. was founded in New York as a direct-mail operation to trade in tea from the cargoes of clipper ships.
