Giorgio Armani
born July 11, 1934, Piacenza, Italy Italian fashion designer. He abandoned medical school and worked as a buyer for a department store (1957-64) before training as a fashion designer. In 1974-75 he introduced his own label of ready-to-wear apparel for men and women. In 1980-81 he founded Giorgio Armani USA, Emporio Armani, and Armani Jeans, and in 1989 he opened shops in London. He was a leader in the move toward a pared-down, unstructured silhouette in menswear and was responsible for the wide-shouldered look for executive women. His designs, often characterized by understated glamour and luxurious fabrics, introduced ease and streamlined modernity into late 20th-century dressing
Giorgio Barbarelli
{i} Giorgione (1477-1510, born Giorgio Barbarelli), known as Giorgio da Castelfranco, Italian painter who was one of the most important artists in the Venetian Renaissance, student of Giovanni Bellini
Giorgio Morandi
born July 20, 1890, Bologna, Italy died June 18, 1964, Bologna Italian painter and etcher. He first exhibited his paintings with the Futurists and was closely associated with the Metaphysical painters, but he is identified with neither school. He repeatedly returned to the subject matter of simple, geometric still lifes of bottles, jars, and boxes; by returning to the same subject matter, he was able to move past content to an exploration of pure form (i.e., line, colour, shape). His contemplative approach gave his landscapes and still lifes a delicacy of tone and subtlety of design. As instructor of etching at Bologna's Academy of Fine Arts (1930-56), he had a profound influence on Italian graphic artists
Giorgio Vasari
born July 30, 1511, Arezzo died June 27, 1574, Florence Italian painter, architect, and writer. Though he was a prolific painter in the Mannerist style, he is more highly regarded as an architect (he designed the Uffizi Palace, now the Uffizi Gallery), but even his architecture is overshadowed by his writings. His Lives of the Most Eminent Architects, Painters, and Sculptors (1550) offers biographies of early to late Renaissance artists. His style is eminently readable and his material is well researched, though when facts were scarce he did not hesitate to fill in the gaps. In his view, Giotto had revived the art of true representation after its decline in the early Middle Ages, and succeeding artists had brought that art progressively closer to the perfection achieved by Michelangelo. The work's second edition (1568) has proved an invaluable resource for art historians
Giorgio da Castelfranco
{i} Giorgione (1477-1510, born Giorgio Barbarelli), Italian painter who was one of the most important artists in the Venetian Renaissance, student of Giovanni Bellini
Giorgio de Chirico
born July 10, 1888, Vólos, Greece died Nov. 19, 1978, Rome, Italy Italian painter. Born to Italian parents in Greece, he studied art in Munich and began painting images juxtaposing the fantastic with the commonplace. In 1911 he moved to Paris, where he produced ominous scenes of deserted piazzas with Classical statues, isolated figures, and oppressive architecture. The element of mystery in his work exerted a great influence on Surrealism in the 1920s. He is known as the founder, with Carlo Carrà and Giorgio Morandi, of Metaphysical painting
