A city of southern Ukraine on Kerch Strait, a shallow waterway connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov and bordered on the west by the Kerch Peninsula. The city was founded by Greek colonists in the sixth century and eventually passed to Russia after the first Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774). Population: 180,500
