(dô/tô or michi), which means way or road Therefore, Shinto is often translated as "the way of the gods " The use of this term dates to around the 6th century A D and was clearly deemed necessary at this time to differentiate this set of beliefs and practices from Buddhism, which was being introduced into Japan around this time
