metamemory
Metamemory is a type of metacognition (thought about thought) that focues on one's memory and memory processes. This can include thinking about what type of elaboration might be best to memorize a set of information or an evaluation of whether or not a certain piece of information will be remembered in the future (e.g., on a test). Metamemory is therefore believed to play a functional role in academic studying. When a student makes a decision about how to study material, decides how long to study it, or evaluates whether it has been committed to memory, he or she can be said to be engaging in metamemory. It is important to note that the focus of metamemory is on memory processes and memory itself; evaluating other aspects of thought, even if it is related to learning, might be considered to be another type of metacognition. For instance, evaluating if one will remember facts from a text that was read would be considered metamemory but evaluating if one has understood the text would be considered metacomprehension
Metamemory, one component of metacognition, is about one’s memory capabilities and strategies that can aid memory, as well as the processes involved in memory self-monitoring. This self-awareness of memory has important implications for how people learn and use memories. When studying, for example, students make judgements of whether they have successfully learned the assigned material and use these decisions, known as "judgements of learning", to allocate study time
