A part of an internal combustion engine, usually made as a removable piece, that closes one end of the engine's cylinders
The closed, often detachable, end of a cylinder in an internal-combustion engine
The detachable metal (aluminum or iron) section that is bolted to the top of the cylinder block It is used to cover the tops of the cylinders, in many cases the cylinder head contains the valves, it also forms part of the combustion chamber It has water and oil passages for cooling and lubrication It also holds the spark plugs On most engines a valve cover or rocker arm cover is located on top of the cylinder head Some engines have just one cylinder head covering several cylinders, while others have separate heads for each cylinder In some motorcycle engines and small engines, the cylinder head is not detachable -- it is cast with the cylinder which forms a blind hole
(Otomotiv) The part above the engine block that contains the combustion chambers and the valves. The spark plugs screw into the top or side of the cylinder head. On most cars, a valve cover, camshaft cover, or a rocker-arm cover is located on top of the cylinder head
The part of the above the engine block that contains the combustion chambers and the valves The spark plugs screw into the top or side of the cylinder head On most cars, a valve cover, camshaft cover, or a rocker-arm cover is located on top of the cylinder head
The top of the cylinder block that contains the spark plugs and valves It seals the cylinder and forms the top of the combustion chamber
Component that bolts to the top of the engine, enclosing the tops of the cylinders
The part of an engine that houses the valve train, exhaust and intake ports, combustion chamber, distributor, spark plugs, etc It sits on top of the engine block
Made of aluminum, it is bolted to the top of each side of the engine block Cylinder heads hold the valves and spark plugs
The removable part of an engine that sits above the cylinders
That portion of a motor that caps the open (generally top) ends of the cylinders In modern engine designs, the cylinder head(s) generally house the spark plugs and the intake/exhaust valves
a detachable plate that covers the closed end of a cylinder chamber in a reciprocating engine or pump
The aluminum or iron casting that houses the combustion chambers, the intake and exhaust ports, and much or all of the valvetrain The head (or heads, if an engine has more than one bank of cylinders) is always directly above the cylinders
A removable part located on the top of the cylinder block; it usually contains valvetrain components and combustion chambers For an overhead cam engine, it contains the camshafts as well A head is an important influence in determining an engines overall power and efficiency
The removable part of the engine that attaches to the cylinder block directly above the cylinders The head is cast from aluminum or iron and houses the combustion chambers, the intake and exhaust ports, spark plugs and much or all of the valve train It has oil and water passages for cooling and lubrication
The portion of the engine that "caps" or seals the combustion chamber and delivers the air/fuel mixture to the engine to be combusted and create power Sometimes referred to as the "Top End" of an engine, the cylinder head usually contains the valves and in the case of overhead cam engines, the camshaft AMERICA'S CAR SHOW with Tom Torbjornsen provides this glossary of automotive terms so Joe Average can discuss car repair and maintenance with Technician Bob If you find a word or term you don't understand in Tom's Corner or the Forum, search for it here
