Possibly the least understood course designation Nearly all courses taught at UWMC count towards specific degree requirements, either as general education (humanities, science, social science etc ) or as required courses for a major Some courses do not -- these are "electives" BUT, all degrees require a minimum number of credits, and a certain number of these can be electives (the number varies from program to program) So, they are not "lost" or "wasted" -- they count towards your degree In fact, most electives are extremely useful in expanding your knowledge of a subject and, if well chosen, can lead you in directions you never thought to try contents
Courses that are not used to meet specific major, general education, or graduation requirements, but can be used to complete the total units required for a degree
Courses which a student may choose without the restriction of a particular major, program or curriculum; optional, not required
Electives are courses you choose to take They make up the difference between the specific courses required for your degree and the number of courses you need to graduate
Courses taken that do not fulfill general education or major requirements May be taken for interest and/or to fulfill unit requirement for graduation or transfer
Some degrees offer you options as to classes you can take that aren't listed specifically in the requirements Read the degree requirements carefully Some degrees restrict your elective choices to specific types of courses
Subjects chosen freely to take credits towards their intended degree
Electives are courses selected at a student's discretion Electives may be partially restricted, such as a selection from a specified group of courses identified to fulfill a particular requirement or they may be "free" electives which may be selected from any course for which the student has proper prerequisites Electives provide opportunities for students to pursue personal interests and to gain general knowledge
Courses which are not a required part of a degree program are electives Some departments may insist that their majors choose between certain electives (referred to as Restricted Electives)
