born May 27, 1818, Tilburg, Neth. died March 24, 1889, Utrecht Dutch ophthalmologist. His study of "muscae volitantes" (spots before the eyes) resulted in Donders' law, stating that the rotation of the eye around the line of sight is involuntary. His research improved diagnosis, operative treatment, and use of eyeglasses for vision problems. He found that in farsightedness the eyeball is shortened, resulting in light rays being focused behind the retina (1858). His finding that astigmatism is caused by uneven corneal and lens surfaces (1862) created the field of scientific clinical refraction. His On the Anomalies of Accommodation and Refraction (1864) was the first authoritative work in the field
Frans Eemil Sillanpää
born Sept. 16, 1888, Hämeenkyrö, Fin., Russian Empire died June 3, 1964, Helsinki, Fin. Finnish novelist. The son of a farmer, he studied natural science but returned to the country to write. Shocked by the Finnish civil war of 1918, he produced his most substantial novel, Meek Heritage (1919), relating how a humble cottager becomes involved with the Red Guards. After several collections of short stories in the late 1920s, he published his best-known work, The Maid Silja (1931), about an old peasant family. People in the Summer Night (1934) is his most polished and poetic novel. In 1939 he became the first Finnish writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature

a Dutch painter who painted many portraits (=paintings of real people) . His most famous portrait is 'The Laughing Cavalier.' (?1580-1666). born 1581/85, Antwerp, Spanish Netherlands died Sept. 1, 1666, Haarlem, Neth. Dutch portrait painter. He spent his life in Haarlem, where he was registered as a master by the Guild of St. Luke in 1610. His group portraits of members of local guilds and military societies, notably the monumental Banquet of Officers of the Civic Guard of St. George (1616), were painted with a technique close to Impressionism in its looseness, unique in Dutch art at the time. He introduced a jovial spirit that revolutionized portraiture and set him apart from his contemporaries. His subjects exude joie de vivre, with an occasional hint of sadness. After 1650 he portrayed elderly people who nervously display the spark of life even as it flickers; these portraits, such as The Women Regents of the Almshouse at Haarlem (1664), are his masterpieces. His work greatly influenced Édouard Manet, Vincent van Gogh, and Robert Henri
