Euler's formula
Either of two important mathematical theorems of Leonhard Euler. The first is a topological invariance (see topology) relating the number of faces, vertices, and edges of any polyhedron. It is written F + V = E + 2, where F is the number of faces, V the number of vertices, and E the number of edges. A cube, for example, has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges, and satisfies this formula. The second formula, used in trigonometry, says e^ix = cos x + isin x where e is the base of the natural logarithm and i is the square root of -1 (see irrational number). When x is equal to or 2, the formula yields two elegant expressions relating , e, and i: e^i = -1 and e^2i = 1
Heron's formula
Formula for finding the area of a triangle in terms of the lengths of its sides. In symbols, if a, b, and c are the lengths of the sides: Area = SquareRoot(s(s -a)(s -b)(s -c)) where s is half the perimeter, or (a + b + c)/2

chemical formula
Expression of the composition or structure of a chemical compound. Formulas for molecules use chemical symbols with subscript numbers to show the number of atoms of each element: O2 for molecular oxygen, O3 for ozone, CH4 for methane, C6H6 for benzene. Parentheses may enclose atoms that act as a group. General formulas show the proportions of atoms in members of a class (e.g., CnH2n+ 2 for alkanes). If the substance does not exist as molecules (see ionic bond), empirical formulas show the relative proportions of the constituents (e.g., NaCl for sodium chloride). Structural formulas show bonds (see bonding) between atoms in a molecule as short lines between symbols; they are particularly useful for showing how isomers differ. A projection formula also indicates the three-dimensional arrangement of the atoms (see Fischer projection; stereochemistry)
chemical formula
combination of symbols representing the composition of a chemical substance
distance formula
Algebraic expression that gives the distances between pairs of points in terms of their coordinates (see coordinate system). In two-and three-dimensional Euclidean space, the distance formulas for points in rectangular coordinates are based on the Pythagorean theorem. The distance between the points (a,b) and (c,d) is given by SquareRoot((a -c)^2 + (b -d)^2). In three dimensional space, the distance between the points (a, b, c) and (d, e, f) is SquareRoot((a -d)^2 + (b -e)^2 + (c -f)^2)
empirical formula
A chemical formula that indicates the relative proportions of the elements in a molecule rather than the actual number of atoms of the elements
empirical formula
